The Change for Change Project
THINK BIG – WORK HARD – ACHIEVE YOUR GOAL
As part of our Touchpoints progam, our fifth graders explore issues of poverty through many lenses. Throughout the year, students visited with guest speakers, exchanged research and opinions with peers at our sister schools, and participated in a variety of community-service projects such as the Holiday Canned Goods Drive. Their final project, the Change for Change Project, challenges our students to apply what they have learned in the classroom to a real-life issue.
Working as individuals or in small groups, students created a Change Project – a project that turns a modest financial investment into greater change. Students created one-page proposals, met with project coaches, and finally pitched their proposals to a panel of judges affectionately known as the Shark Tank. The judges awarded start-up funds to each group based upon the merit of the project, with a specific focus in three areas: what is the intended goal of the project; what is the rationale; and what is the action plan.
The Shark Tank invested a total $750 in these projects. Collectively, the students’ goals are to:
– Raise $3850 that will be donated to various local and national charities
– Collect 1000 books that will be donated to a Title 1 School
– Collect 100 backpacks with school supplies that will be donated to a Title 1 School
– Collect 100 pairs of shoes that will be donated to the Las Vegas Rescue Mission
– Collect 100 pieces of sports equipment that will be donated to Sports for All
Please join us on April 30 from 2-3PM for our Change for Change Fair in Henderson Hall. Similar in format to a science fair, students have an opportunity to share their projects with our school population and members of our local business community. We hope that you will join us and support our student’s efforts to create meaningful change locally and globally.
Please RSVP to Chris Bezsylko, Middle School Principal and Director of Curriculum, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
